Obama The Socialist? True of False.

The United States of America controls everything and everyone’s assets. They control our money, and take it away if we don’t do what they tell us. They have mandates and regulation, controlling the way we marry, the way we worship, even the way we walk. The year is 2028. And November 4th, 2028 will mark the end of capitalism.

That is the fear of many Americans today. They call Obama a socialist, something they themselves don’t understand. They see how he wants to tackle the health care problem, that he wants to take from the rich and give to the poor, making the middle-class and poor (anyone who makes under $250,000) the governments slave and dependent on the government. However the question we face as rational, free Americans, do these worries and concerns have any real merit? Thats the question that has been itching at me, and one I have long found the answer to.
Truth be told, though, many Americans (including myself to some extent), don’t understand socialism. When I asked myself last year what socialism is, I couldn’t put my finger around it. That bugged me, truly, because I like to know what I’m voting for — and if I were to vote for Obama, I wanted to know what he is being accused of. So, then, to answer our big question which I talked about earlier, we must first answer what is socialism.
The textbook answer is as follows: “a.) a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole. b.) Policy or practice based on this theory, (c.) (in Marxist theory) a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism.” However, socialism is much more then that, as you will find out when you check my research and find out what you define socialism as. Socialism is basically, the government takes ownership of everything and mandates and regulates business to make everything fair. This goes against what majority of Americans believe. Most Americans believe in the free market system. Ever heard of medium wage? The reason why Republicans are against it is because that regulation, in theory, will rise prices. On the other hand, this theory of the free market is insisting that businesses don’t go ahead and pay above and beyond medium wage, which most do. The only businesses that don’t are small business, like local markets or local restaurants who don’t yet make enough money to pay everyone higher wages.
Hence the fear of socialism in this country. We don’t like change; we don’t like our government controlling every little thing of our lives. Thus the question, is Obama a socialist? Does he wish the government to take control of everything, and only give you stuff if you do this, this and this? Well, lets take a look at what he says about health care first, and take it from there.
Obama’s health care plan is this, at its core: mandating that all insurance companies keep health records on computers, with back-ups, instead of having tons of physical space to keep those files. Think of how many patients each health insurance company has, and all the records they have to keep. That means they have to pay for security, cameras, update those technologies and the storage space for these files. Now, they will do this over five years, investing tax payers money (ten billion a year over the next five years) to help insurance companies move to this new system. Now there you go, Obama is spending our tax money! True, but as he himself said during the third debate, we may have to pay for this now, but it’s better for all America. It could save you up to 2,500 a year on your health insurance — which is more then what McCain wants to give you to find your own health insurance (more on that in a later blog). If you don’t think it will help you, think of your children and grandkids. Do you really want to tell them, “Sorry we left you an America where health insurance is out of the reach for us.” — I think not.
He is also doing much, much more. Here is a quote from Obama’s site:
“*  Lower drug costs by allowing the importation of safe medicines from other developed countries, increasing the use of generic drugs in public programs and taking on drug companies that block cheaper generic medicines from the market
* Require hospitals to collect and report health care cost and quality data
* Reduce the costs of catastrophic illnesses for employers and their employees.
* Reform the insurance market to increase competition by taking on anticompetitive activity that drives up prices without improving quality of care.”
Yes, the government is stepping in here, but we have all ready seen what not enough regulation can do — anyone pay attention to the news lately? See how the markets crash? Thats, in part, because of deregulation. All Obama wants to do is regulate a few things that will make things better for you and your kids.
I know what your thinking. Your sitting here and saying, “OK, this doesn’t sound too bad, man, but get to the part where the government gives you a universal health care like Canada has.” Thats the thing, the Democratic Party is for a universal health care (like Hillary Clinton) but not Obama. Not so much, at least. I’ll let Obama take this one: “On health care reform, the American people are too often offered two extremes – government-run health care with higher taxes or letting the insurance companies operate without rules. Barack Obama and Joe Biden believe both of these extremes are wrong, and that’s why they’ve proposed a plan that strengthens employer coverage, makes insurance companies accountable and ensures patient choice of doctor and care without government interference.” However, there still is a problem that needs to be addressed. What about the millions of Americans with no insurance because there job doesn’t offer one and they can’t afford an extra $300 a month (cheapest health for a family I can find)? What do we do about them? Obama does have a plan for them, allow them to purchase the same health insurance that both Senator’s Obama and McCain enjoy. What does the word purchase mean? That means you buy it. This doesn’t mean the government wont spend some tax money on making this insurance more affordable, however it doesn’t mean Obama’s plan is to do that. This is the one question I have for Obama, and maybe someone can answer it. Exactly how much will I have to spend, and how much tax money for it?
The bottom line is, when it comes to health insurance, Obama is more about regulation then socialism. Granted, that is apart of socialism; however we know what can happen if there isn’t enough regulation. If someone doesn’t do something, the day will come when Americans can’t afford health insurance. To tell you the truth, I don’t want to leave that America for my kids.
However, there is more to Obama, right? There has to be, he’s a radical socialist democrat, isn’t he? So what about education, is he planning on making my kids dependent upon the government instead of standing on there own two feet? Let me explain his education plan when it comes to college. Obama plans to give your kids a four thousand dollar tax credit every year to help pay for school. This will cover an entire semester or even pay for school entirely if you child chooses a two-year college, which generally they will apply for more scholarships and be able to get more money to pay for more schooling if they so choose. Wait — thats socialism, right? The government giving you money, making you dependent on them? True, but what is the definition of giving? Thats one person is doing nothing while another gives freely? Thats not the case here, Obama is rewarding your child a four thousand dollar tax credit as long as he or she completes 100 hours of community service. So, basically, Obama will be teaching millions of kids the value of community service, while paying them forty dollars an hour? Yep, basically, thats it. If thats socialist, then the whole idea of Pell grants from the government and other finical aid is more socialistic than Obama’s plan, and most Americans finds those services helpful and a good addition to America. Speaking of which, Obama also wants to expand the requirements so more low-income families will be able to take advantage of these grants.
Now what does McCain have planned to help you kids? More of the same, really. I haven’t heard him speak of college once, and anytime it goes to education he will always talk about K-12, never beyond high school.
So far, is Obama a socialist? He’s more of a step towards it, if anything, but really he’s doing the responsible thing and watching out for his country. Isn’t that what a President should do? But what about taxes?
Now I’m not going to show and explain Obama’s tax plan fully, but only point out a few things that people keep bringing up. Remember Joe the Plumber? Well, he asked a simple question, and apparently Obama said something about sharing the wealth. Is that a bad thing? What is wrong with we determining who pays more taxes? And what do taxes pay for? Many things, the war in Iraq, our Senators, Governors and other political leaders. To making jobs, pays for cops and 911 services, helps kids go to school and pay for K-12 schooling. Without taxes, we wouldn’t have those things, so its a good thing to pay taxes, right?
However, why is it under Bush companies who send jobs overseas get to save on taxes, more so then you? Why is that the rich can save more money on taxes, when you have to carry the burden? McCain has a tough talk when it comes to taxes, but he never answer these questions. He plays you, and your fears of a socialist extreme government, because he doesn’t want to tell you the truth. He is for making the Bush tax cuts (and therefore the loopholes for big business) permanent and he is for making you pay taxes. He will say he has tax relief for you; but he has phrased his words carefully in the debate. He says “Why raise anyones taxes?” He doesn’t ever say he will lower taxes, does he? Or change the tax code that is currently being used? So, basically, he wants to make the middle-class and low-income families pay for cops, firefighters, our military and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
So, instead of everyone paying for the services we are our enjoying (and for the price we pay for our freedom, because our soldiers who fight for it gets paid by our taxes), only the middle-class and low-income families will carry the burden? How is that not sharing the wealth, but only to the people who don’t need it? How is that not class warfare, but only on the people who can’t afford it?
You see, thats what McCain hides from you. Go to his web site. See what he has planned for you. He does have one tax cut that will help you (assuming you don’t work on roads). A gas tax relief for three or four months. Which means if a bridge where to break, a damn to fail, who would pay to fix it? Would construction workers be unemployed for those months? Would we continue to pay them, but they work less hours? Or would they continue to work but then how are we to afford that? McCain doesn’t answer.
In conclusion, America has very clear choices. One could be argued to lead to socialism, but the other will lead this country to something that will end up hurting middle-class and low-income families. Oh, and the one leading to socialism, is hardly a socialist President and is someone who wishes to protect his country from companies who don’t give a darn about you, the American worker that McCain seems to be so proud of. Obama is for giving our kids money in return for the community service they do, he is for lowering health care instead of taxing your health benefits, and he is for giving you tax cuts to further help you. Does this mean you will be dependent on the government? Maybe, but if thats so, then you probably all ready are because the Bush tax cuts do help and I know many people who go out and spend that money on food and such. Well, if those stimulus checks stimulate the economy, then what Obama preposes will stimulate it even more by giving you more money. Isn’t that great?
